I am an avid scrap-booker and love creating homemade crafts, so I know that buying supplies from art supply retail stores can be quite expensive. To save on supplies and still be super unique and creative, here I have compiled all of the ways I’ve found.
• Now that big stash of periodicals that has been accumulating under your bed-frame can be put to quite a number of uses. Making sayings or quotes made out of cutting out different sized colored letters is my lovable technique. A cool, retro effect can be achieved by combining letters cut from the cover page, various ads, and article titles.
Cute pictures and designs to use in visual projects may be in old magazines. The pages from fashion spreads as the wallpaper for my scrapbooks, which I like. They are always really themed and have little to no writing on them. If they do have some writing, you can always cover it up with a picture or other design.
A good thing to do is to use an internet search to find ideas for your scrapbook. When I began to put together a scrapbook for my daughter, I searched the internet for phrases like "baby girl" to find appropriate graphics to include. I was able to locate so many great things, and I really saved as well.
If you take the time to do different searches on your search engine you can find some designs or ideas for your project. You’ll find plenty of results which you can print out and use in your projects. Be careful! Some images may have copyrights on them, so I suggest only using these graphics for personal purposes. This should not be an issue at all if they are employed only for your own personal crafts.
Your local library can be a good, low cost way to print these out if you don’t have a printer of your own at home. You’ll save tons of money over buying designs and stickers from an art supply store.
Have you got the glue? It is a hardly known fact that if you don’t have a glue, you might make some! While working on your project, decide how much glue is necessary and mix flour and water in equal measures. A pasty substance is the ultimate goal; mix it up until it gets to this consistency.
This type of homemade glue should be used immediately after mixing, otherwise it will become moldy if left out. After it is used, it is good to left out to dry completely for paper projects.
You can always add glitter to glue and then apply it like paint to decorate things.
4. Many cool crafts call for some type of modeling clay; don’t be afraid to make your own at home! Instead of splurging on the stuff at the store, you can make it right in your kitchen with ingredients that you’ve probably already got. Use 1 cup flour, a tablespoon oil, 2 tablespoons cream of tarter, 1/2 cup salt, and 1 cup water. Mix all the ingredients in a large pan and cook gently for around 3 minutes. It should be stored after cooling in a container that is airtight, kept in the fridge, until it is needed for use. Clay will dry out if you fail to seal the container tightly.
5. Be observant with your surroundings and you will find a vast assortment of materials. Everything has a use, and you can make masks with scissors and crayons or markers or use a large pizza box for a collage, decorating it with dried, painted pieces of pasta you glue on.
When you’re crafting, look around the house using not only your eyes, but your imagination. The options are endless!
