I am a serious scrap-booker and enjoy making homemade crafts, so I realize that it can be very expensive to purchase supplies from art supply shop. So, here I’ve compiled all of the ways I’ve found to save on supplies and still be super unique and creative.
• That huge magazine stack that’s been collecting under your bed can be used in many ways. Cutting out different sized and colored letters and making sayings or quotes is a technique I love. Check the front and back covers, as well as the ads and titles of articles. When you put all these together, you have a unique design with a retro look.
You can also look through old magazines for cute pictures and graphic designs to incorporate into collages, scrapbooks, or any other visual project. For my scrapbook background pages, I like to look for graphics in the fashion magazines. They have little to no writing on them since they are always really themed. Unwanted writing can easily be covered with a picture or other design.
A real good idea is to use search engines to find graphics when scrap-booking. I searched Google images for different terms like "baby girl", "it’s a girl" etc, when I started my daughter’s scrapbook. I was able to locate so many great things, and I really saved as well.
To get the terms related to the project you are doing, Search for different search engines images tool. You can get plenty of ideas and materials to use if you print them out. Copyright restrictions limit many items to personal use, so please use these graphics for non-business applications. Till they are used within your crafts which are personal, that will not be a problem.
Your local library can be a good, low cost way to print these out if you don’t have a printer of your own at home. Finding graphics by using alternative sources is much less expensive than getting decals and stickers from hobby shops or art supply stores.
Don’t worry if you don’t have any glue on hand you can always make some. Once you figure out how much glue you will need, mix together one part flour to one part water. Mix it up until it turns into a pasty substance.
This type of glue should be used right after you make it, as it will go moldy if left out and unused. This item is very well suited for paper projects; remember to leave it out to dry completely after use.
Also, even if you do have glue, you can always add glitter for a nice touch. Use it as paint to decorate stuff.
4. Homemade Modeling Clay- Some type of modeling clay is quite often a necessary ingredient in many of the unique and interesting crafts available today. Instead of splurging on the stuff at the store, you can make it right in your kitchen with ingredients that you’ve probably already got. 1 cup flour, a tablespoon oil, 2 tablespoons cream of tarter, 1/2 cup salt and 1 cup water are used. Cook all of the ingredients for approximately three minutes after mixing them together in a big pan. Once it is cooled off you can store it in an airtight contained until you are ready to use it. Make sure the container is air tight or the clay will dry up!
5. Explore - You’ll find materials everywhere! With scissors and markers, a pizza box can be cut up to make a big wall collage, dry pasta can be painted and glued on as a decoration paper plates can be masks.
Think openly about things around you. There are unlimited possibilities for crafts.
