Decorative & Tole Painting: Patterns & Instructions

Buying supplies from art supply retail stores can be quite expensive because i know as i am an avid scrap-booker and love creating homemade crafts. So, here I’ve compiled all of the ways I’ve found to save on supplies and still be super unique and creative.

You probably have a pile of magazines accumulating somewhere in the house, and now there are lots of ways you can make some use of them. Something I love to do is to use scissors to snip out various sized and colored letters and put them together to form words or sentences. To get a cool retro feel, you can cut out letters from the cover page, different ads, and article titles and combine them all .

Another way to find good graphics to include in your collages or scrap books is to search in old magazines. The pages from fashion spreads as the wallpaper for my scrapbooks, which I like. They have little to no writing on them since they are always really themed. In case they happen to have some writing to show, the same can always be wrapped up in the garb of either a depiction or drawing pattern.

B: A real good idea is to use search engines to find graphics when scrap-booking. When starting a scrapbook you can search online for ideas and themes such as "It’s a Girl" or "Baby Girl" I found a lot of cute stuff and saved!

Simply run a search through various search engines by using their image tools for any terms that have to do with the project that you are working on. You will discover a lot of information that applies to your projects and you can print it out. I’d suggest you only use these graphics for personal purposes though, since some may have copyrights on them. Till they are used within your crafts which are personal, that will not be a problem.

For just a few cents per page, you can print items at your local library. Finding graphics by using alternative sources is much less expensive than getting decals and stickers from hobby shops or art supply stores.

3. Don’t worry if you don’t have any glue on hand you can always make some. While working on your project, decide how much glue is necessary and mix flour and water in equal measures. Until it turns into a pasty substance keep mixing it.

This type of homemade glue should be used immediately after mixing, otherwise it will become moldy if left out. After it is used, it is good to left out to dry completely for paper projects.

You can always add glitter for a nice touch even if you do have glue and use it as paint to decorate stuff.

D: Homemade Modeling Clay- Some type of modeling clay is quite often a necessary ingredient in many of the unique and interesting crafts available today. You can make this stuff on your own in the kitchen with things that you most likely already have at home, as opposed to buying it in a store. Use 1 cup flour, a tablespoon oil, 2 tablespoons cream of tarter, 1/2 cup salt, and 1 cup water. Mix all the ingredients in a large pan and cook gently for around 3 minutes. It should be stored after cooling in a container that is airtight, kept in the fridge, until it is needed for use. Clay will dry out if you fail to seal the container tightly.

5. Be observant with your surroundings and you will find a vast assortment of materials. Paper Plates can be masks with some scissors and markers, A pizza box can be cut up to make a big wall collage, dry pasta can be painted many colors and glued on as a decoration.

When you’re crafting, look around the house using not only your eyes, but your imagination. The options are endless!
