Decorative & Tole Painting: Stencils

Should you decide to blow the dust bunnies off your old magazine collection, you have several options for finally getting some use of it. I really enjoy the method of cutting out various colors and sizes of letters to make quotes or sayings. When cutting out letters, consider taking them from article headers, advertisement copy, and even the cover page and combining them for a hip, yet nostalgic, effect.

Another way to find good graphics to include in your collages or scrap books is to search in old magazines. The pages from fashion spreads as the wallpaper for my scrapbooks, which I like. They have just a little bit of writing on them, or none at all, and you can count on them to be very thematic. If they do have some writing, you can always cover it up with a picture or other design.

A really good idea when scrap-booking is to use Search Engines to find graphics. When starting a scrapbook you can search online for ideas and themes such as "It’s a Girl" or "Baby Girl" Not only did I find a lot of cute stuff, I also saved a ton of money!

Just search on different search engines images tool for terms related to the project you’re doing. Plenty of results which you can print out and use in your projects will be found by you. Because some graphics may be copyrighted, it’s a good idea to use anything that you find for personal purposes only. As long as they’re used only within your personal crafts, that shouldn’t be a problem.

The lack of a printer should not stop you as they are readily available for your use at your local library or school for a small fee. You can purchase stickers and various designs from supply stores but there are much cheaper ways.

Most people do not know that you can make your own glue instead of buying it from the store. Mix an equal amount of flour and water, depending on how much glue you need. Combine the ingredients until it is a paste consistency.

This type of homemade glue should be used immediately after mixing, otherwise it will become moldy if left out. It is nice for paper projects but you should leave it out so it can dry totally following its use.

You can always add glitter for a nice touch even if you do have glue and use it as paint to decorate stuff.
