Home Arts & Crafts: Metalworking

Finally the huge stack of magazines that’s been accumulating under your bed can now be put to use in a lot of different ways. I like to make my own sayings and quotes by snipping various sized letters of the alphabet in different shades and putting them together. Check the front and back covers, as well as the ads and titles of articles. When you put all these together, you have a unique design with a retro look.

You can also look through old magazines for cute pictures and graphic designs to incorporate into collages, scrapbooks, or any other visual project. I also like to use the pages from fashion spreads as background pages for my scrapbooks. They have just a little bit of writing on them, or none at all, and you can count on them to be very thematic. Unwanted writing can easily be covered with a picture or other design.

When creating your scrap books, you can use internet search engines to find appropriate graphics to include. For example, when I started my daughter’s scrapbook, I searched Google images for terms like "baby girl", "it’s a girl", and etc. I found a lot of cute stuff and saved!

Simply run a search through various search engines by using their image tools for any terms that have to do with the project that you are working on. You’ll find plenty of results which you can print out and use in your projects. Because some graphics may be copyrighted, it’s a good idea to use anything that you find for personal purposes only. As long as you use them for your individual crafts, this shouldn’t be an issue.

If you attend for a couple cents a sheet, you can print them out at your local library or school if you don’t have a printer. Buying stickers and designs from art supply stores is costlier.

If you are running a bit low on glue, it’s a little-known fact that you can make some yourself! Mix an equal amount of flour and water, depending on how much glue you need. Until it turns into a pasty substance keep mixing it.

This type of homemade glue should be used immediately after mixing, otherwise it will become moldy if left out. It’s good for paper projects and should be left out to dry completely after it’s used.

Also, even if you do have glue, you can always add glitter for a nice touch. Use it as paint to decorate stuff.
