The cost of purchasing art supplies from retail outlets can be prohibitive for avid scrapbookers and crafters. To save on supplies and still be super unique and creative, here I have compiled all of the ways I’ve found.
A: That huge magazine stack that’s been collecting under your bed can be used in many ways. I favor cutting out letters in various colors and sizes and putting them together to spell out aphorisms and quotations. Check the front and back covers, as well as the ads and titles of articles. When you put all these together, you have a unique design with a retro look.
You can also look through old magazines for cute pictures and graphic designs to incorporate into collages, scrapbooks, or any other visual project. Another good idea is to use for backgrounds in a scrapbook is pages from a fashion spread magazine. They truly follow a theme and don’t have too much writing on them. If they do have some writing, you can always cover it up with a picture or other design.
2. Use Search Engines to find Graphics: This is a really good idea when scrap-booking. When starting a scrapbook you can search online for ideas and themes such as "It’s a Girl" or "Baby Girl" By using alternative sources, I found a good many appropriate things and saved money as well.
Using a search engine’s images page can help you find terms that you need for a project that you are working on. Plenty of results which you can print out and use in your projects will be found by you. Copyright restrictions limit many items to personal use, so please use these graphics for non-business applications. This should not be an issue at all if they are employed only for your own personal crafts.
The lack of a printer should not stop you as they are readily available for your use at your local library or school for a small fee. Finding graphics by using alternative sources is much less expensive than getting decals and stickers from hobby shops or art supply stores.
C: Got Glue? It’s a little known fact that if you’ve got no glue, you can make some! While working on your project, decide how much glue is necessary and mix flour and water in equal measures. Once you’ve reached the consistency of a paste, you can quit mixing it up.
Don’t make the glue until you are ready to use it because it will get moldy if left to sit. This item is very well suited for paper projects; remember to leave it out to dry completely after use.
You can always add glitter to glue and then apply it like paint to decorate things.
D: Homemade Modeling Clay- Some type of modeling clay is quite often a necessary ingredient in many of the unique and interesting crafts available today. You can make this stuff on your own in the kitchen with things that you most likely already have at home, as opposed to buying it in a store. Now, combine 1 cup of flour, 1/2 cup of salt, 2 tablespoons of cream of tarter, 1 tablespoon of oil, and 1 cup of water. Saute the combined ingredients in a large pan for a few minutes. Once the mixture is at room temperature, place it in an airtight container, and store in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it. If the container is not an air tight container you may lose your clay because it will dry up.
5. If you take a few minutes to observe what it around you, you may find some supplies you can use. You can showcase your creativity by making masks out of paper plates, embellishing them with markers and cutting eye holes with scissors. Perhaps you could transform an old pizza box, opened up, into a collage for your wall, decorating it with dyed dry pasta shapes which have been glued on.
Think openly about things around you. There are unlimited possibilities for crafts.
