Needle Arts & Crafts: Dishcloths & Potholders

I am always making homemade crafts and I know that buying all of your supplies from an art supply store can be expensive. So, now I have put together every way I discovered to spend less money for supplies and still make something special and imaginative.

1. If you have a large collection of periodicals that have been piling up around your house, there are a variety of different ways to put them to good use. One of my favorite pastimes is making sayings or quotations by cutting out letters of many different sizes and hues. To get a cool retro look just cut out letters from different ads, articles and the cover and mix them together.

You can also look through old magazines for cute pictures and graphic designs to incorporate into collages, scrapbooks, or any other visual project. I also like to use the pages from fashion spreads as background pages for my scrapbooks. They have just a little bit of writing on them, or none at all, and you can count on them to be very thematic. Cut out a figure from a magazine and use it to hide any writing that shows.

B: A good thing to do is to use an internet search to find ideas for your scrapbook. When I began to put together a scrapbook for my daughter, I searched the internet for phrases like "baby girl" to find appropriate graphics to include. Not only did I find a lot of cute stuff, I also saved a ton of money!

Simply run a search through various search engines by using their image tools for any terms that have to do with the project that you are working on. Plenty of results which you can print out and use in your projects will be found by you. Copyright restrictions limit many items to personal use, so please use these graphics for non-business applications. If it is for your own personal use it should not be an issue.

The lack of a printer should not stop you as they are readily available for your use at your local library or school for a small fee. You can purchase stickers and various designs from supply stores but there are much cheaper ways.

• Most people do not know that you can make your own glue instead of buying it from the store. Based on the amount of glue required, combine equal parts flour plus water. Mix it up until it turns into a pasty substance.

You should use the glue immediately after you finish making it because if you leave it out, it will become moldy. It’s good for paper projects and should be left out to dry completely after it’s used.

Also, even if you do have glue, you can always add glitter for a nice touch. Use it as paint to decorate stuff.

4. Homemade Modeling Clay- Some type of modeling clay is quite often a necessary ingredient in many of the unique and interesting crafts available today. The ingredients that you’ve probably already got can make it right in your kitchen instead of splurging on the stuff at the store. 1 cup flour, a tablespoon oil, 2 tablespoons cream of tarter, 1/2 cup salt and 1 cup water are used. Saute the combined ingredients in a large pan for a few minutes. Until you plan to use it, let it cool in the airtight container in the refrigerator. Be sure the container is closed tightly or the clay will get hard!

5. Look Around! There are supplies all around you! You can showcase your creativity by making masks out of paper plates, embellishing them with markers and cutting eye holes with scissors. Perhaps you could transform an old pizza box, opened up, into a collage for your wall, decorating it with dyed dry pasta shapes which have been glued on.

When you’re crafting, look around the house using not only your eyes, but your imagination. The options are endless!
