Needle Arts & Crafts: Scarves, Hats & Accessories

You probably have a pile of magazines accumulating somewhere in the house, and now there are lots of ways you can make some use of them. A technique I love is to cut out different sized and colored letters and make sayings or quotes. Check the front and back covers, as well as the ads and titles of articles. When you put all these together, you have a unique design with a retro look.

If you have any old magazines laying around you may find ideas or pictures and graphic designs to make a collage or scrapbook. I also like to use the pages from fashion spreads as background pages for my scrapbooks. They are always really themed and have little to no writing on them. If they do have some writing, you can always cover it up with a picture or other design.

A real good idea is to use search engines to find graphics when scrap-booking. I searched Google images for different terms like "baby girl", "it’s a girl" etc, when I started my daughter’s scrapbook. By doing a little searching and looking around I was able to find materials to use and saved a lot.

Using a search engine’s images page can help you find terms that you need for a project that you are working on. You will discover a lot of information that applies to your projects and you can print it out. Because some graphics may be copyrighted, it’s a good idea to use anything that you find for personal purposes only. Till they are used within your crafts which are personal, that will not be a problem.

Your local library can be a good, low cost way to print these out if you don’t have a printer of your own at home. Finding graphics by using alternative sources is much less expensive than getting decals and stickers from hobby shops or art supply stores.

If you are running a bit low on glue, it’s a little-known fact that you can make some yourself! Based on the amount of glue required, combine equal parts flour plus water. A pasty substance is the ultimate goal; mix it up until it gets to this consistency.

You should use the glue immediately after you finish making it because if you leave it out, it will become moldy. After it is used, it is good to left out to dry completely for paper projects.

Also, even if you do have glue, you can always add glitter for a nice touch. Use it as paint to decorate stuff.
