I am a serious scrap-booker and enjoy making homemade crafts, so I realize that it can be very expensive to purchase supplies from art supply shop. To save on supplies and still be super unique and creative I’ve compiled all of the ways I’ve found.
• You probably have a pile of magazines accumulating somewhere in the house, and now there are lots of ways you can make some use of them. I favor cutting out letters in various colors and sizes and putting them together to spell out aphorisms and quotations. You can cut out letters from the cover page, different ads, and article titles.
For incorporating into collages, scrapbooks, or any other visual project using cute pictures and graphic designs you can also look through old magazines. I have developed the habit of decorating my scrapbooks with pages from fashion spreads to serve as the background. They truly follow a theme and don’t have too much writing on them. Unwanted writing can easily be covered with a picture or other design.
Use Search Engines to find Graphics: This is a really good idea when scrap-booking. For example, when I started my daughter’s scrapbook, I searched Google images for terms like "baby girl", "it’s a girl", and etc. I found a lot of cute stuff and saved!
To get the terms related to the project you are doing, Search for different search engines images tool. You will be able to utilize much of the information in your plans, there will be a lot of data available just print it out and go from there. Copyright restrictions limit many items to personal use, so please use these graphics for non-business applications. As long as you use them for your individual crafts, this shouldn’t be an issue.
If you don’t have a printer, you can print them out at your local library or school if you attend for a couple cents a sheet. You’ll save tons of money over buying designs and stickers from an art supply store.
3. Got Glue? It’s a little known fact that if you’ve got no glue, you can make some! Based on the amount of glue required, combine equal parts flour plus water. A pasty substance is the ultimate goal; mix it up until it gets to this consistency.
This type of homemade glue should be used immediately after mixing, otherwise it will become moldy if left out. This must be left to dry totally after it is used; it is very good to use for any kind of paper project.
For a nice touch, add glitter to your glue and use it as paint for decorating items in your scrapbook.
There are a lot of cool crafts out there which call for some type of modeling clay. You can make things in your kitchen with what you already have on hand instead of buying it at the grocery store. 1 cup flour, a tablespoon oil, 2 tablespoons cream of tarter, 1/2 cup salt and 1 cup water are used. Saute the combined ingredients in a large pan for a few minutes. Once the mixture is at room temperature, place it in an airtight container, and store in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it. Make sure the container is air tight or the clay will dry up!
5. Look Around! There are supplies all around you! You can showcase your creativity by making masks out of paper plates, embellishing them with markers and cutting eye holes with scissors. Perhaps you could transform an old pizza box, opened up, into a collage for your wall, decorating it with dyed dry pasta shapes which have been glued on.
When you’re crafting, look around the house using not only your eyes, but your imagination. The options are endless!
